Abstract

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is a hyphenated analytical technique that separates chemical mixtures and molecularly distinguishes various components in a test sample. These instruments, given their compactness and simplicity, are sensitive and designed with efficient data systems, which not only monitor and retrieve data from gas chromatography and mass spectrometer but also automatically identify the components with reference libraries of known compounds. With minimal challenges of solubility and separation, the GC-MS has advantages of enhanced chromatographic resolution and higher peak capacity that can be optimized by various electronic controls. GC-MS is applied in the fields of environmental science, forensics, clinical and biological research, pharmaceutical, and food and flavor industry. The concise, reliable, automated system provides rapid, reproducible and effective results that play a major role in the progress of science and technology. This review would help to understand the basic working of GC-MS and its application to the readers in a concise manner.
