Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the principal types of inflammatory bowel disease. IBD has evolved into a global disease with great variations affecting not only the highly developed countries in North America and Europe but also the newly industrialized countries in Asia. In Europe, the incidence of UC is 24.3–505 per 100,000 person-years, and that of CD is 12.7–322 per 100,000 person-years.
