Sustainable urban public transport requires finding a balance between the economic and social objectives of the urban community, ensuring the need for mobility of the inhabitants without affecting the environmental and health factors. As the Petrosani Basin has a high degree of urbanization, in order to implement sustainable urban mobility, it is necessary to start from the results of the analysis of the current situation of the public passenger transport system. For this, a first step was to study the influence of factors (natural, socio-political, infrastructure and superstructure of the transport system, operating techniques, economic) specific to the Petrosani Basin, to the public passenger transport system. The analysis of the transport demand (passenger mobility per hour, days, season) is also an important point, considering that the Petrosani Basin (114,843 inhabitants) consists of 6 cities, with the attraction pole and also the access point in the Petrosani Basin being the Municipality Petrosani (34,331 inhabitants). Taking climate change mitigation goals into account, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is becoming a priority. All this leads to the understanding of the particularities of the Petrosani Basin regarding the urban public passenger transport. The SWOT analysis highlights that in order to achieve sustainable urban mobility, a feasible solution is the reorganization of the public passenger transport system. In these circumstances, the redesign of the public transport system must take into account the implementation of ecological means of transport, as it can be stated that sustainable urban mobility is one of the key directions for the development of the Petrosani Basin. The sustainable development of the urban public passenger transport system in the Petrosani Basin can be achieved through the cooperation of all stakeholders, namely the government, the county council, local councils, public transport providers, residents.
