Abstract

Kinetic catalyzed effect of Ag(I) on redox reaction of complexing agent, 2,3,4-trihydroxy acetophenone phenylhydrozone (THAPPH) with hydrogen peroxide was studied in order to develop a selective kinetic spectrophotometric method for Ag(I). This redox color reaction was monitored at 385 nm and 16th minute where it shows the maximum absorbance. The calculated molar absorptivity (16.903 x104 L mo1-1 cm-1) and Sandell’s sensitivity (0.6382 μg cm-2) of method indicated that the method is more sensitive. The correlation coefficient of the color reaction is found to be 0.996, indicates better linearity between two variables. The absorbance linearity (0.2 to 0.8 µg mL-1 for Ag(I)) was found by tanθ and fixed time methods. The obtained standard deviation (0.0019), relative standard deviation (0.35%) and confidence limit (±0.0021) with 0.0993 μg cm-2 lower detection limit and 0.331 μg cm-2 lower quantity limit were found that the method is more precise and accurate. The validity of the method were checked by the successful determination of Ag(I) in spiked water samples, photo film waste solutions and compared with AAS method. The obtained results were evaluated in terms of student T-test & F-test. The obtained results concluded that the method was more sensitive and selective.
